German optics and optoelectronics company Carl Zeiss has opened its technology-focussed global capability centre (GCC) in India.

Located in Bengaluru, the new centre will focus on cloud computing, cybersecurity, network operations, and software services. It will also support Carl Zeiss Meditec, the company’s medical tech division.

The Zeiss India Global Capability Centre is a strategic hub designed to leverage Bengaluru’s information technology (IT) talent pool.

It will focus on driving technology solutions and expanding Zeiss’s global research and development (R&D) capabilities.

Located at Prestige Tech Park in Kadubeesanahalli, the centre spans an area of 43,000ft2. It will accommodate over 600 employees with expertise in areas such as medical technologies, vision care, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and digital transformation.

Zeiss India chief financial officer Dhaval Radia said: “This centre will accelerate the digital transformation of our growing global operations and stands as a clear testament to our unwavering commitment to building a solid foundation for Zeiss’s growth in India.”

Additionally, the German lens maker plans to double its workforce to 5,000 employees in the next three years.

The workforce expansion will also include hiring employees for Zeiss’s fifth manufacturing facility in India.

The new plant, located near Bengaluru airport, is being built at a cost of INR30bn ($355.67m). It is set to begin operations in 2025.

Upon completion, the site is set to become Zeiss’s largest lens manufacturing facility outside of Germany.

Karnataka Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology, Rural Development, and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge said: “India now hosts over 4,000 Global Capability Centres (GCCs), with Karnataka alone accounting for 38% of these. The state has the potential to drive growth across diverse sectors, including agritech, aerospace, and technology.

“I am excited to see the positive outcomes of public-private partnerships and encourage more such alliances to drive impactful solutions.”

Furthermore, Zeiss India has partnered with the Karnataka government to strengthen the region’s research and development (R&D) ecosystem for emerging technologies.

This joint initiative will support the region’s startup ecosystem by setting up a collaborative centre where Zeiss will provide infrastructure and expertise, while startups will contribute innovation.

The aim is to accelerate the commercialisation of advanced products, such as AI-driven diagnostics and smart optical devices.

In June, the optical systems manufacturer introduced its arivis Pro version 4.2 software for microscopy image analysis.
