Fresenius Medical Care announced that its heart and lung business Xenios has launched the Xenios 2.0 system to assist healthcare professionals in extracorporeal life support (ECLS).
The system is approved under the new Medical Device Regulation (MDR) to provide all types of ECLS treatments, from neonatal to adult patients.
Xenios 2.0 is designed with advanced safety features, a simplified guided user interface, and advanced connectivity to support physicians and caregivers during ECLS treatment.
It comes with several new technical features, including a redesigned graphical user interface (GUI) that supports all relevant handling steps and functions before and during treatment.
Xenios CEO Benjamin Waldmann said: “Based on new regulatory requirements and the need for increased safety standards, the Xenios 2.0 offers enhanced safety features to support physicians and caregivers.
“With Xenios 2.0 we are taking the next step towards improved ECLS treatment.”
According to Fresenius, the Xenios 2.0 system comes with a power consumption monitoring feature that helps with circuit handling.
The design of its integrated pressure sensors (IPS) is said to mitigate the risk of air aspiration and measure the pressure directly at the tubing kit.
In addition, the system’s intelligent alarm functions provide recommendations for action in the event of certain physiological and technical alarms, for prompt and appropriate responses.
Fresenius said that its Xenios 2.0 is equipped for various backup scenarios to maintain treatment even in the event of a system failure.
The system comes with two backup battery packs that provide power during a power failure or interruption, and a second pump drive if the initial pump drive fails.
Its trend display allows users to visualise critical parameters and observe their changes over time, providing a clear and continuous overview of the system.
Also, the system supports the simple implementation of medical data, allowing for flexible integration of machine data into various patient monitoring systems.
The Xenios 2.0 system automatically sends medical data to a patient data management system (PDMS) or electronic medical record (EMR), reducing the workload for healthcare providers.
