DePuy Synthes, the orthopaedics company of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, has commercially rolled out its MatrixSTERNUM Fixation System in the US.
MatrixSTERNUM is a plate and screw fixation system designed to help stabilise and secure the front part of the chest wall after procedures like open-heart surgery and chest surgery.
The device is designed to address patients’ needs in the operating room by providing better locking, faster chest fixation, and thinner, low-profile plates compared to other products.
MatrixSTERNUM offers a new option for surgeons performing cardiac procedures, enabling stabilisation after major chest surgeries, said the medical device company.
DePuy Synthes trauma, extremities, craniomaxillofacial, animal health and sports worldwide president Oray Boston said: “We are committed to developing products that not only meet but exceed the specific needs of heart surgery patients and healthcare providers.
“The MatrixSTERNUM Fixation System is a new advancement for post-operative chest stabilisation, with stronger, faster and thinner solutions that streamline the procedure and offer surgeons greater flexibility to meet patient needs.”
DePuy Synthes said that its MatrixSTERNUM Fixation System delivers three-fold stronger locking strength than the other products in the market, improving fixation after surgery.
Its multi-hole screw guides facilitate a more rapid and precise plate fixation process, significantly reducing procedure time.
Also, the system features 1.5 mm low-profile plates, which are both thin and highly contourable, making the plates less noticeable under the skin, said DePuy Synthes.
UT Health East Texas cardiothoracic surgeon Tyrone Galbreath said: “After trialling the system, I am quite impressed with how easy it is to use, its intentional and versatile design, and the high quality of the instruments for attaching the plates.
“I’ve yet to find another system that allows me to fully plate the sternum in under three minutes.
“The MatrixSTERNUM Fixation System makes it simple to secure the sternal plates, and I am excited to start using the system when it launches!”
