Front Line Medical Technologies has announced the launch of its CE-marked COBRA-OS device in the UK, providing healthcare providers with a new tool for managing critical bleeding in trauma and emergency care.
The device has received regulatory approval as a Class III medical device under the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), allowing its sale and use within the UK.
The COBRA-OS, which stands for “Control Of Bleeding, Resuscitation, Arterial Occlusion System,” is designed to temporarily occlude the aorta during emergencies, buying time for patients until definitive care can be provided.
The device features an ultra-low-profile 4 Fr sheath, simplifying deployment and minimising procedural risks. Its design facilitates rapid and precise intervention, making it suitable for time-critical trauma situations.
The COBRA-OS device comes with an integrated system to support its deployment and usage.
This system includes a 10cc sword-handled syringe for precise operation, a 0.018-inch floppy tip guidewire to assist with navigation, a 4 Fr kink-resistant sheath for stability, and a 21G 7cm bevelled angiographic needle to facilitate arterial access.
The device also offers partial resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) capability, enabling medical professionals to tailor blood flow control in complex trauma cases. Despite its compact size, the COBRA-OS is built to withstand significant aortic pressures without kinking, ensuring stability during use, according to Front Line Medical Technologies.
The Canadian firm said that the introduction of the COBRA-OS addresses several technical challenges associated with REBOA. These include simplifying deployment and improving accessibility for emergency medical teams operating under time constraints.
Front Line Medical Technologies CEO Asha Parekh said: “The United Kingdom represents a crucial milestone in our mission to advance aortic occlusion technology and improve trauma care outcomes.
“We designed this device to address critical time constraints in emergency settings, where rapid deployment and controlled occlusion can make a vital difference.”
To facilitate the UK launch, Front Line Medical Technologies has partnered with Mermaid Medical, a distributor specialising in vascular and interventional products. This collaboration will ensure healthcare providers across the UK receive comprehensive support and training for the COBRA-OS, said Front Line Medical Technologies.
The partnership also extends to the Nordic region, leveraging Mermaid Medical’s experience to bring the COBRA-OS to healthcare systems across Europe.
