GE HealthCare has launched Sonic DL for 3D, a new addition to its imaging portfolio, designed to accelerate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans for various clinical applications.

Sonic DL is a deep learning-based technology designed to expedite image acquisition in MRI.

Building on the GE HealthCare’s deep learning technology and the success of its AIR Recon DL, Sonic DL offers up to 12 times scan acceleration without compromising diagnostic quality.

Originally introduced in June 2023 for cardiac MRI, Sonic DL is now being extended to 3D volumetric imaging. It will be expanded for brain, spine, orthopaedic, body, and cardiac exams.

According to GE HealthCare, this expansion reduces scan times by up to 86%, maintaining the same 12x acceleration.

Sonic DL for 3D enables faster imaging for a majority of magnetic resonance (MR) exams. By combining its speed with AIR Recon DL’s noise reduction technology, this deep learning integration helps clinicians reduce scan times, improve image resolution by up to 55%, and make faster, more accurate diagnoses.

Additionally, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared technology is designed to provide high-resolution imaging for neurology, enabling quicker, clearer insights into complex brain structures and neurological conditions.

In orthopaedics, it accelerates imaging of joints, ligaments, and bones, reducing scan times to minimise patient discomfort, especially for those with mobility challenges.

By enhancing speed and clarity, Sonic DL 3D improves clinical workflows, boosts patient comfort, and supports timely diagnoses.

GE HealthCare global MR president and CEO Kelly Londy said: “Now, with Sonic DL’s expansion to 3D and its ability to combine with AIR Recon DL, we’re offering a combination of speed, accuracy, and clarity.

“We believe Sonic DL will be a game-changer in key clinical areas, substantially impacting our customers’ ability to deliver high-quality care while enhancing the capabilities of their existing systems through seamless upgrades.”

GE HealthCare said that it continues its investment in deep learning technologies, available for both in-field MR upgrades and new installations.

By providing fast imaging solutions, the Nasdaq-listed healthcare technology firm aims to help healthcare providers reduce patient backlogs, increase exam capacity, and deliver cost-effective care.

With Sonic DL’s expanded 3D imaging capabilities, GE HealthCare will support clinicians in delivering timely diagnostics while improving the patient experience.

Recently, the healthcare technology company launched its new Pristina Via mammography system for improved breast care.
