Singapore-based medical device company Genesis Medtech has received China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approval for its iReach Omnia powered stapler.
iReach Omnia is said to be the world’s first powered stapler with 90° articulation capability.
The device addresses key challenges in complex laparoscopic surgeries by enabling surgeons with superior precision and access in tight and deep anatomical positions, said Genesis Medtech.
According to the company, colorectal cancer is one of the top three cancers worldwide, and surgical resection of the tumour is the primary treatment for low rectal cancer.
Surgical staplers play a key role in minimally invasive surgeries by replacing traditional manual sutures, reducing infection risk and improving surgical efficiency.
However, existing staplers with standard articulation angles from 45° to 60° face challenges in complex procedures such as low anterior resection or single-port thoracic surgery.
Building on its 90° articulation capability, iReach Omnia will provide surgeons with the flexibility and precision necessary to perform stapling even in the most confined spaces.
The powered stapler enables precise vertical cutting and stapling in the low rectal resections, reducing the risk of leakage, and enhancing long-term patient outcomes.
Also, the device potentially reduces the need for multiple stapler firings, minimises weak points in the staple line, thus lowering the risk of anastomotic leakage.
Genesis said that its iReach Omnia empowers surgeons to deliver better patient outcomes in complex procedures such as colorectal and thoracic surgeries.
Last year, Genesis sold JC Medical, including the intellectual property and commercial rights of its J-Valve System, to US-based medical device company Edwards Lifesciences.
Its J-Valve System is a transcatheter aortic valve replacement intended for the treatment of severe aortic regurgitation.
In addition, Edwards has made an equity investment of $25m in Genesis MedTech to support its product and market development efforts.
