Matia Mobility, a company specialising in medical equipment, has obtained a Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code for Tek RMD from the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Tek RMD is a robotic mobilisation device (RMD).
According to Matia Mobility, this milestone makes standing mobility more accessible to individuals with walking disabilities who are confined to wheelchairs. It offers new opportunities for independence and improving both physical and mental well-being, said the company.
Tek RMD, now covered by Medicare, commercial insurance, and the US Veterans Administration, is designed to transform mobility by allowing users to stand and move at eye level. This capability empowers them to engage fully in daily activities, such as cooking, reaching high shelves, and participating in conversations and social interactions from a standing position, which can promote confidence and social inclusion.
With the approval of the HCPCS code, individuals across the US can now access Tek RMD with greater ease, and financial barriers to obtaining the device are significantly lowered. The inclusion of the Tek RMD in Medicare coverage is further supported by backing from major commercial insurers, enhancing its accessibility.
Matia Mobility CEO Steven Boal said: “We are incredibly excited about this development.
“Receiving the HCPCS code from CMS means more people will have access to the life-changing benefits of the Tek RMD. Whether through Medicare, private insurance, or VA benefits, our goal is to help as many individuals as possible reclaim their independence and improve their quality of life.”
The Tek RMD is Matia Mobility’s first product to reach the market. The company launched Tek RMD in 2015 and, after receiving interest globally, decided to expand its availability worldwide.
The device has a CE Mark and two US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearances and is now available in 23 countries.
Matia Mobility has also developed the Tek RMD M1 mobility platform, which enables users to independently and safely sit, stand, and navigate environments that were previously inaccessible, both indoors and outdoors, and all at eye level.
Featuring the smallest footprint in the industry, the Tek RMD M1 allows users to access places and reach items that would be out of reach with a standard wheelchair, whether at home or at work. The M1’s compact design fits into small spaces, reducing the need for home renovations and often lowering overall living costs for individuals with walking disabilities.
Tek RMD M1 is a patented technology, bearing both a CE Mark and FDA 510(k) clearance.
