Mevion Medical Systems has received approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) for its MEVION S250i Proton Therapy System.
This approval makes the S250i the first compact proton therapy system to be approved in China.
Massachusetts-based Mevion Medical Systems is now said to be the first company to offer this advanced, compact and integrated proton therapy technology to Chinese cancer patients.
MEVION S250i is also the first single-room proton system that is cleared in both the US and China.
The system’s design features a superconducting proton accelerator and an integrated gantry, offering a smaller footprint and reduced energy consumption compared to traditional proton systems.
Additionally, it includes HYPERSCAN pencil beam scanning technology for faster, precise tumour targeting, and Adaptive Aperture pMLC, which minimises damage to healthy tissue, potentially reducing side effects.

MEVION S250i offers several key advantages over conventional proton therapy systems.
Its compact size allows for easier integration into existing hospitals and clinics.
The system is also said to be more affordable than traditional proton therapy systems, increasing accessibility for a broader range of patients.
By using HYPERSCAN technology, the MEVION S250i enables faster treatment times, improving patient comfort and convenience.
In addition, its Adaptive Aperture pMLC technology ensures precise dose delivery to the tumour while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Since 2013, Mevion Medical Systems has been offering single-room systems for cancer care. The company’s product lineup also includes the MEVION S250-FIT proton therapy system.
In September this year, Mevion Medical Systems partnered with NELCO Worldwide to accelerate the adoption of MEVION S250-FIT.
