UK-based medical technology company Smith+Nephew has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for CORIOGRAPH pre-op planning and modelling services.
The CORIOGRAPH pre-op planning and modelling software is exclusively designed for use with the company’s CORI Surgical System for total hip arthroplasty (THA).
It uses either X-rays or CT scans for planning and modelling, allowing surgeons to make a patient-specific plan for the best possible outcome.
Recently, Orlando Health Jewett Orthopaedic Institute surgeon-in-chief and chairman George Haidukewych completed the first procedures using CORIOGRAPH.
Haidukewych said: “The plan was extremely accurate and provided an opportunity to trial different offsets and combinations prior to surgery. This was invaluable in saving time and optimising the component position and sizing.
“CT-based templating with patient-specific impingement modelling is clearly superior to traditional methods of digital templating. It allows for personalisation of the surgery to the patient’s specific needs of activities of daily living.”
According to Smith+Nephew, the CORI Surgical System provides unique tools and software to deliver a flexible and scalable platform across knee and hip joint arthroplasty indications.
Its CORIOGRAPH pre-op planning and modelling services are developed based on more than 15 years of clinical expertise and 350,000 image-based hip and knee surgery plans.
The software optimises implant planning and personalisation, including advanced modelling capabilities that use patient-specific spinopelvic classification and pelvic tilt.
In addition to the mechanics of simple range-of-motion, the services simulate daily activities that help surgeons make decisions on optimal implant placement.
CORIOGRAPH features image-agnostic planning capabilities with 2D and/or 3D images to help personalise the end-to-end care specifically to the patient need.
Also, it can be used with all Smith+Nephew hip implant solutions and technologies.
Together with RI.HIP solutions and the recently launched CATALYSTEM Primary Hip System, CORIOGRAPH provides a complete solution for primary total hip arthroplasty.
Smith+Nephew global orthopaedics president Craig Gaffin said: “With the addition of Hip pre-op planning to CORIOGRAPH services, we are now truly personalising surgery for hip and knee for each patient’s specific needs.
“I can speak as the business leader and a patient here, as my hip was the first one to be planned with CORIOGRAPH services for Hip.
“Through the planning process, my surgeon was able to tell what kind of activities I can expect to perform after the surgery based on simulated models of my hip bones.”
