Surmodics has announced the commercial release of the Pounce XL Thrombectomy System, expanding its suite of thrombectomy solutions for peripheral arteries.
The system is designed for rapid endovascular removal of thrombi and emboli from arteries with diameters of 5.5-10 mm, complementing existing systems for smaller vessel sizes.
It is intended for use in iliac and femoral arteries, enhancing the Pounce Thrombectomy Platform’s capability to address vessel diameters ranging from 2–10 mm.
The fully mechanical system provides a standalone solution for removing peripheral arterial thrombi and emboli in both the lower and upper extremities.

The Pounce XL System features a dual-basket technology that removes blood clots without the need for capital equipment or thrombolytics, optimising single-session treatments.
It is designed to minimise the blood loss and reduce the risk of flow-limiting dissection, offering a low-risk procedure for patients.
The system’s effectiveness is validated by real-world data from the PROWL registry, which reported an average use time of 20.3 minutes and limited device-related adverse events.
The Pounce Thrombectomy Platform comprises the Pounce, Pounce LP, and Pounce XL systems for non-surgical removal of thrombi and emboli from peripheral arteries.
Allina Health Mercy Hospital vascular surgeon Anna Marjan is among the first physicians to use the Pounce XL Thrombectomy System during the product’s LMR.
Anna Marjan said: “Removing organized clot from large peripheral arteries without a surgical cutdown can be very challenging.
