Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, has gained the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for new functionality of its Ethos radiotherapy system.

The upgrades introduce a streamlined workflow for daily treatment adjustments across a wider range of anatomical areas. They also help improve connectivity to patient data.

Ethos 2.0, the latest generation of the Ethos radiotherapy system is designed to simplify the implementation of adaptive, personalised radiotherapy.

It provides clinical teams with a versatile, integrated solution that enhances both clinical and operational efficiencies with various new and updated features.

The new features include enhanced algorithms that power the Ethos Intelligent Optimization Engine (IOE). The software enables a more optimised approach to treatment planning and dose delivery, further reducing treatment times.

The system now has the HyperSight imaging solution that helps in acquiring images that are integrated into the software to streamline workflows, facilitating accurate dose calculations for adaptive treatments.

In addition, the Ethos radiotherapy system now supports automated contouring of over 70 AI-segmented anatomical structures.

The latest version was expanded to include structures like the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and bowel using HyperSight images, thereby minimising the manual contouring process.

Furthermore, the latest generation of the Ethos system enhances clinical and operational efficiencies by enabling seamless data sharing. These data can be integrated with the ARIA CORE oncology management solution for effective patient management.

Varian head Arthur Kaindl said: “Our latest Ethos system reflects our ongoing commitment to develop innovative solutions that make real-time, adaptive radiotherapy treatment easier to accomplish in any setting.

“By reducing workflow complexity, leveraging advanced, AI-powered technology, and enabling greater connectivity to patient data across our ecosystem, we continue to invest in comprehensive tools to help clinicians integrate precision throughout the patient journey.”

Launched in 2019, the Ethos system has supported several radiotherapy procedures.

According to Varian’s data, providers utilising Ethos opted for the adapted treatment plan 88% of the time.

With a single Ethos system, clinicians can switch between online or offline adaptation modes, or opt for conventional image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT).
